you are the standard!

A few years ago when I decided to join a new gym, part of the initiation process was a standard fitness test. Having taken part in many of these tests, both as a participant and an examiner during my studies at Western (I studied kinesiology), I already knew what was “in store”. In fact, I already knew the results! After completing the test, I patiently waited for the results. The suspense was not killing me. Finally, the examiner revealed that I was “above average”.

What does “average” mean anyway? Should I be satisfied with “above average”? The average person in North America doesn’t exercise (despite the overwhelming scientific evidence of the benefits). Is this a good standard?

I subscribe to the process of comparing yourself to........wait for it...........yourself. Let me explain. To often we compare ourselves to others. Media shoves this concept down our throats inundating us with images of perfect people using their perfect products. We must change the paradigm of “them versus me” to “me versus me”. This new concept is both empowering and realistic. If you are a healthier person than you were yesterday, last week, last year, keep doing what you’re doing because you’re on the right track.

It is easy to get overwhelmed by what we should be doing. Break it down, and slowly add healthy habits into your life. Over time, they will add up. Then, as we look back and compare ourselves to ourselves, we will see results that are meaningful to us.

You are the standard!

Interesting psychological factoid!

Health psychology shows that if we are held accountable for our actions, we are more likely to carry them out and succeed. How can we use this to our advantage? Find a friend or a loved one to who will join you in your new healthy habit. Make them a workout partner. Cut out refined sugar together. Or just hit up the local yoga studio with them.
